Psalm 14:1 (ESV)
1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God…”
The proof of God’s existence is all around us, beginning with His creation of the heavens and earth. David put it best.
Psalm 19:1-6 (ESV)
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun, 5 which comes out like a bridegroom leaving his chamber, and, like a strong man, runs its course with joy. 6 Its rising is from the end of the heavens, and its circuit to the end of them, and there is nothing hidden from its heat.
No matter where one lives, he sees this evidence every day. God’s creation does not reveal the best there is to know about Him, that is, the love and mercy that is the essence of His being, but it does reveal His unparalleled power. Only an omnipotent being could create this universe in which we live. The theories that man has concocted to explain the universe, though accepted by the majority, are nonsensical at best. The idea that this world, and everything in it, came to be by an accidental explosion of dead matter billions of years ago, only makes sense to a fool. When the Gentiles denied the existence of God, Paul has some choice words for them.
Romans 1:18-20 (ESV)
18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. 19 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
Why did these Gentiles suppress the truth? They did it for the same reason men do it today—they wanted to govern themselves and not be restricted by the moral standards of the God they denied. Paul points out that these people decided to serve things created instead of the Creator. They made gods of themselves, among other things, and that way they could make their own rules by which to live. Does that sound familiar? It is pretty much the same thing that man does today.
Man’s belief system, along with the actions to which it leads, does not change the reality of God. It might plunge those who deny God into moral decadence (Romans 1:21-32), but it will never excuse their willful denial of the true and living God. Why? Because as Paul said, God’s divine nature has been clearly revealed by the things that He has made.
When we consider the design and order of the universe, it would be foolish to conclude that it came about by accident. When all the facts are honestly considered, this is the most logical, and even scientific, conclusion. If God did not create the universe, from where did it come? We know that something cannot come from nothing. Since something now exists, something has always been. The question is, is that “something” unintelligent matter, or did an intelligent being, that is, God, create it? Only a fool would choose the latter.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
