I recently heard someone say, “We are not wired for monogamy.” This statement demonstrates the ignorance of the world toward God, and, therefore, toward reality. When the creature begins to conclude things that are contrary to what the Creator says, the conclusion is going to be unrealistic. The statement above comes from the heart of a person corrupted by sin, and who sees things only from the viewpoint of the flesh. The truth is, we are wired to choose how we are going to live our lives.
Genesis 1:27 (ESV)
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
God created us in His image, meaning we are intellectual beings who can choose what course of life we will follow. Yes, God has created us with an assortment of emotions and desires, but He also created us with the ability to control them and do His will. On the other hand, we also have to ability to disobey God. Adam and Eve demonstrated this in the garden (Genesis 3:1-24). The point of it is this—God has created us to be free moral beings with the ability to choose how to live. That is how we are all wired.
Being monogamous or not is not in our wiring, choosing to be obedient or disobedient is. Yes, Adam and Eve both had the desire to eat, but at the end of the day, they had to decide between obeying or disobeying the command of God. This is true with all our desires. Yes, God created all of us with sexual desires, but the question is, how are we going to fulfill them? God’s will is that they are fulfilled within the institution of marriage involving a man and a female.
Hebrews 13:4 (ESV)
4 Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous.
We all can live by these words. How do I know? It is because that is how we have been wired—with the ability to obey or disobey God. Furthermore, God has revealed His will on marriage.
Genesis 2:24 (ESV)
24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.
What does this passage teach? It teaches that marriage is permanent and that faithfulness is required. One man, one woman for life. That is the will of God. We are wired with the ability to do this. The choice is up to us, not some innate desire to have multiple partners in life.
It is the flesh—human nature corrupted by sin—that tries to convince us that we are created with desires that cause us to do things contrary to the will of God. This gives man a license to sin. Do not believe it. Our desires, whatever they might be, cannot force us to do anything. They can, however, be controlled and molded into wanting to do God’s will. Ultimately, what we do with our desires is up to us as individuals. That is the way we have been wired.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
