Doubt is a real and present danger that all Christians face. The devil wants us to doubt because he knows it can lead to the shipwreck of our faith. Fortunately, God has given us everything we need to overcome doubt and be firmly fixed in our faith.
The devil wants us to doubt that God is real because he knows that without faith, it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6). However, we can overcome doubting God’s existence by simply looking around us. God’s handiwork is everywhere.
Psalm 19:1–4 (ESV)
1 The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork. 2 Day to day pours out speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. 3 There is no speech, nor are there words, whose voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out through all the earth, and their words to the end of the world. In them he has set a tent for the sun.
The planetary system above us affirms that God is real. There is no other answer. Evolutionists want us to believe that the universe came about by accident. They say that all things ultimately came into being by some unexplained evolutionary development of matter. In a nutshell, they claim that the universe is here by chance and that it all started with an explosion of dead matter. They call this the Big Bang theory.
I am not a scientist, and I do not have a PhD in astronomy, but I do know this—the Big Bang theory makes no sense. Any belief that forces one to conclude that either something came from nothing or that the something that everything came from was dead matter, is nonsensical. The biblical position that all things came about by the intelligent design of God is far superior to any atheistic theories that claim the universe and everything in it came about by chance. As Ronald Regan once illustrated, you would not believe that a well-designed plate of food came about by an explosion in a kitchen that happened by chance, why in the world would you conclude such a thing about a universe that is a thousand times more complex than a plate of food, and that shows undeniable evidence of design? Do you want to remove all doubt that there is a God? Just look to the heavens that He created.
Another thing that the devil wants you to doubt, and that is harmful to your soul if you do, is your salvation. Satan knows that when we doubt the eternal life that God has promised us (1 John 2:25), we rob ourselves of the hope that serves as an anchor to our souls (Hebrews 6:19). We overcome this doubt when we realize that we do not save ourselves by meritorious works, that is, we do not earn our way to heaven, but instead are saved by grace through faith (Ephesian 2:8).
Doubt about our salvation begins to creep into our minds when we start thinking about not being good enough to make it to heaven. The solution to overcoming this is by acknowledging the fact that none of us are good enough to go to heaven. It is not our goodness that grants us eternal life, it is the mercy of our God Who does not hold our sins against us.
Romans 4:7–8 (ESV)
7 “Blessed are those whose lawless deeds are forgiven, and whose sins are covered; 8 blessed is the man against whom the Lord will not count his sin.”
It is because God does not count our sins against us that all doubt of our salvation should be removed. We stand before God holy and blameless (Ephesians 1:4). Our only responsibility is to repent and pray to God for forgiveness when we sin and God will do the rest (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9). Never allow the devil to fill your mind with doubt when it comes to being saved. God is faithful (1 Corinthians 1:9), and He has assured us that we are in a state of “no condemnation” (Romans 8:1).
When we trust in God and believe His Word, all doubt vanishes, and we remain overcomers in Christ.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
