No matter what has happened in your life today, whether you had a good day, a bad day, or just a tiring day, you know that, if you are a child of God, you have an inheritance.

Romans 8:16-17 (ESV)
16  The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17  and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.

To claim your inheritance, you have to be willing to suffer through any difficulties of life that might tempt you to quit.  In the next verse of Romans 8, Paul reminds us that enduring the struggles of life is worth it in the end.

Romans 8:18 (ESV)
18  For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.

The glory that is to be revealed in us refers to the glorious bodies we will have when we take possession of our inheritance in heaven.  We are told in Philippians 3:21 that our bodies will be transformed to be like our Lord’s glorious body when He comes back to get us and take us home to heaven.  All this should help us handle anything life throws at us, knowing that things are only going to get better from here, as long as we remain faithful to our God.

Listen to what Peter wrote about our inheritance.

1 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,

Peter uses three terms to describe the inheritance of our hope.

Incorruptible – Our inheritance is not liable to corruption or decay.

Undefiled – Our inheritance is not susceptible to contamination.

Fades not – The beauty and splendor of our inheritance are perpetual.

How different is our inheritance from earthly ones?  What can you inherit in this world that does not soon lose its attractiveness and appeal?  In fact, what can you inherit in this world that does not at some point perish altogether?  Can you think of anything?  You inherit money, and before you know it, someone else is spending it, and soon it is gone.  You inherit a house, and before you know it, the roof is leaking and the floors are squeaking.  You inherit your father’s business, and before you know it, instead of you running the business, the business is running you and your health begins to fail.

Earthly inheritances do not offer much hope, but our inheritance is a different matter.  It is everlasting.  This truth should sustain us through all the problems of life.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things
