Jesus once said, “…unless you believe that I am you will die in your sins”(John 8:24). Of course, to believe that Jesus was the Son of God would take hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:14-17). Fortunately, people in the first century had the miraculous help of signs and wonders to help them believe in Jesus.
Mark 16:20 (ESV)
20 And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them and confirmed the message by accompanying signs.
Hebrews 2:3-4 (ESV)
3 How shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard, 4 while God also bore witness by signs and wonders and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.
These passages refer to the miracles performed by the apostles of Christ that confirmed their preaching, but even more impressive were the miracles performed by Jesus Himself. His miracles were recorded for the very purpose of persuading people to believe in Him.
John 20:30-31 (ESV)
30 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; 31 but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
While John recorded far fewer miracles than the synoptic gospels, the ones that he did record (7 in total) were impressive and emphatically declared the deity of Christ. Let’s briefly consider them.
1) Jesus turned water into wine, showing His power over natural substance (John 2:1-11).
2) Jesus healed the nobleman’s son from afar, showing His power, not over physical alignments, but over geographical distance (John 4:46-54).
3) Jesus healed a man who had been crippled for thirty-eight years, showing His power over disease and time (John 5:1-9).
4) Jesus fed well over five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two small fish, showing His power over quantity (John 6:1-13).
5) Jesus walked on water, showing His power over nature. Even the sea obeys His voice (John 6:16-21).
6) Jesus healed a man born blind, showing His power over the human body (John 9:1-38).
7) Jesus raised Lazarus from the dead, showing His power over death (John 11:1-44).
The miracles of Christ show us that His power is limitless and that He is, without a doubt, the Son of the Most High God. Thank God we have such a wonderful Savior. If you have not accepted Him by your obedience to the gospel, do it as soon as possible. The one who has power over land and sea, wind and rain, things material and immaterial, also has the power to save you to the uttermost, but you must accept Him by obeying the gospel (Acts 2:38).
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
