Will Rogers once said, “We are all ignorant, only on different subjects.” He was right about that. Ignorance is not always a terrible flaw—it just depends on the subject. If I want to know how ignorant I am on a variety of subjects, all I have to do is watch an episode of Jeopardy. Not doing well on Jeopardy, however, is probably not going to have much of an impact on my life.
When it comes to ignorance, the subject matters, and there are no subjects more important than matters of the soul.
The salvation of the soul depends, to a large extent, on one’s knowledge of the Word of God. God’s Word instructs us of His will, and doing it is crucial to salvation (Matthew 7:21).
John once warned us of the consequences of not abiding in the doctrine of Christ.
2 John 1:9 (ESV)
9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
We can clearly see how important it is to be familiar with the teaching of Christ. Scores of people are spiritually lost because they are ignorant of the teaching of our Savior. While, as the old saying goes, “ignorance is bliss,” it is also devastating to the soul because God will not give anyone a pass for not doing His will due to ignorance.
Acts 17:30 (ESV)
30 The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,
Do you know the will of God? Are you familiar with the teaching of Christ? If not, that is a flaw that you need to fix sooner than later. There is only one way to do that and that is to study the Word of God. That will not only familiarize you with God’s will, but it will give you invaluable guidance for life, and lead you to heaven after a while.
Psalm 119:105 (ESV)
105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.
Everything from properly obeying the gospel of Christ and becoming a Christian, to living appropriately in God’s eyes (and thereby maintaining fellowship with Him) is at our fingertips (1 John 1:7), but we must take advantage of it.
Do not be ignorant of the one most important thing, that is, the will of God. Study the Bible daily. We all can grow in our knowledge, and Peter was incessant that we do so. He encouraged the young in Christ by saying, “…long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation” (1 Peter 2:2). He urged all of us to add knowledge to our faith (2 Peter 1:5) and “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18).
What a blessing it is to have the Bible. If we arm ourselves with the Word of God, Satan doesn’t stand a chance in his attacks against us. If spiritual ignorance is your flaw, start fixing it now.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
