The Bible speaks of reverence for God in terms of godly fear.  To fear God is to give Him the respect that He deserves which is a part of having reverence for God.

Ecclesiastes 12:13 (KJV)
13 Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

Why did Noah build the ark, and do it precisely the way God commanded Him to do it?  It was because he had a reverent fear of God.

Hebrews 11:7 (ESV)
7 By faith Noah, being warned by God concerning events as yet unseen, in reverent fear constructed an ark for the saving of his household. By this he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

This is what true reverence looks like.  It obeys God regardless of what He commands.  We do not have to like the command.  The command may not make a whole lot of sense to us, but we obey anyway because we revere the One who gave it.  This led Abraham to show he was willing to sacrifice Isaac.

Genesis 22:11–13 (ESV)
11 But the angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said, “Abraham, Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” 12 He said, “Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him, for now I know that you fear God, seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.” 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him was a ram, caught in a thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering instead of his son.

Anything less than complete obedience to God is irreverent.  Whenever we fail to do what God commands of us, we are showing Him disrespect.

Luke 6:46 (ESV)
46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?

The word “Lord” is a term of respect, and when used regarding Christ, an acknowledgment of His supreme authority.  Thus, to call Jesus Lord and then disobey Him is hypocritical and a demonstration that one really does not know God.

 1 John 2:4 (ESV)
4 Whoever says “I know him” but does not keep his commandments is a liar, and the truth is not in him,

If we truly know God, we will do what He commands of us because we are aware of His unmatchable power and strength.  Knowing that He is all-powerful, all-seeing, and every in presence fills us with godly fear and leads to our obedience in all things pertaining to God.

Do we fear God?  Do we have the proper respect and reverence for Him?  If we say yes, we need to prove it by our obedient conduct consistently.

1 Peter 1:17 (ESV)
17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
