How do you feel about the truth? The Psalmist revealed how he felt about it, and we should feel the same as he did.
Psalm 119:97 (ESV)
97 Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
One reason the Psalmist loved the truth was because he understood its value.
Psalm 119:11 (ESV)
11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.
The Word of God is our best defense against sin. As long as the truth is abiding in us, we can overcome any type of sin.
1 John 3:9 (ESV)
9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God.
The seed is the Word of God (Luke 8:11). It is our obedience to it that purifies our soul.
1 Peter 1:22 (ESV)
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
The saving power of the truth is not only in the purity that it produces but also in the faith that it generates.
Romans 10:17 (ESV)
17 So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
Since it is impossible to please God without faith (Hebrews 11:6), we can immediately see the value of God’s Word. Faith gives us victory (1 John 5:4) and the Word gives us faith. Thank God that we have His Word.
No wonder the Psalmist loved the law of the Lord and made it his meditation. We should do the same thing for we probably know more about what the Word can do than even he did. We are blessed to have in our possession both the Old and the New Testament. What an advantage it is to have the complete Word of God that we can read and study whenever we want (Romans 3:1-2). Are you taking advantage of the Word of God?
If we love the Word of God as we should, we will not tamper with it by adding or taking away from it. From the start false teachers have attempted to corrupt the truth (2 Corinthians 2:17). The churches of Galatia had to deal with false teachers who were adding to the Word of God and thereby producing another gospel; a gospel that only had the power to condemn, not to save (Galatians 1:6-9). If we love God’s Word, not only will we not tamper with it, but we will also defend it against those that would.
Philippians 1:15-16 (ESV)
15 Some indeed preach Christ from envy and rivalry, but others from good will. 16 The latter do it out of love, knowing that I am put here for the defense of the gospel.
It is time to take inventory of our hearts to make sure that we love the truth as we should. If we do not, it is probably because we have forgotten its value and all that it does for us.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
