First John starts off with a bang. John opens up with a truth that should raise the view of Jesus of anyone who holds Him in doubt by denying His divine nature.
1 John 1:1-2 (ESV)
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us—
Jesus is not just another created being. He is eternal, having been with the Father from the beginning—a fact that declares to us His deity.
When the beginning began, Jesus was already there. When heaven and earth were created and darkness prevailed upon the face of the deep; when the first glimmer of light broke through that darkness, and the firmament was created amid the water, Jesus was there.
When the waters that were under the firmament were divided from the waters that were above, and the waters beneath were gathered together in one place, Jesus was there. When the dry land appeared and was called earth and the waters called seas, Jesus was there.
When the day was divided from the night and the two great lights were made, the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night, Jesus was there.
When the seas were filled with living beings, the skies with the birds of the air, the earth with cattle and creeping things, Jesus was there. When mankind, as the crowning point of God’s creation, was created in His own image and after His own likeness, Jesus was there. Yes, when the beginning began Jesus was already there. Jesus Himself affirmed His eternal nature.
Revelation 22:13 (ESV)
13 I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”
Some teach that Jesus is just a created being, and that He is not divine, but the Bible teaches that He is God (John 1:3; Colossians 1:16-17). Jesus, being eternal, was God in the beginning, which presupposes the fact that He was God before the beginning, and has been God since the beginning. Jesus is God, was God, has always been God, and will always be God, and this fact is verified throughout the Bible.
Titus 2:13 (ESV)
13 Waiting for our blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ,
Hebrews 1:8 (ESV)
8 But of the Son he says, “Your throne, O God, is forever and ever, the scepter of uprightness is the scepter of your kingdom.
To be saved, we must accept this truth and give Jesus the glory He deserves as the Son of God. Jesus said, “…unless you believe that I am, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24).
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
