Jesus is the Head of the church. All Bible believers would agree with this statement. After all, the Bible clearly affirms it.
Ephesians 1:22 (ESV)
22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church.
Paul asserted this again, with even more emphasis, in Colossians 1.
Colossians 1:18 (ESV)
18 And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.
In light of these biblical statements, it is no wonder that all agree with the headship of Christ. The problem is most denominational churches only agree with this truth in word but not in deed and creed. In other words, they say that Jesus is the head of the church but then they contradict themselves by what they practice and preach. Never was this more true than with the Episcopal Church.
The Episcopal Church was recently cast onto center stage when one of its pastors, Mariann Budde, the Episcopal bishop of Washington, gave a pro-homosexual and transgender speech during the inaugural prayer service. The sermon she preached was in harmony with Episcopalian doctrine which accepts that which is an abomination to God, that is, homosexuality.
The Episcopalian church claims to follow the teachings of Christ, but it is only lip service. Listen to what they claim to believe.
“As Episcopalians, we believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ, whose life, death, and resurrection saved the world” (episcopalchurch.org/what-we-believe).
They say they believe in and follow the teachings of Jesus Christ but they don’t! Listen to what they say they believe next.
“The Episcopal Church embraces a legacy of inclusion, aspiring to tell and exemplify God’s love for every human being; people of all genders and sexual orientations serve as bishops, priests, and deacons in our church. Laypeople and clergy work together in leadership and governance” (episcopalchurch.org/what-we-believe).
To accept homosexuality is sinful because God condemns it (Romans 1:21-24). To truth is many passages in both the Old and New Testaments of the Bible condemn homosexuality.
What about embracing all genders to serve as bishops? That is sinful as well. It is a violation of the teaching of Christ. Paul, whose teachings were the teachings of Christ (1 Corinthians 14:37), condemned women serving as bishops (1 Timothy 2:11-3:2). How can a woman be a bishop in the Lord’s church without exercising authority over a man, something Paul, by inspiration, commanded not to be done? It is impossible.
Paul also says that the bishop must be the “husband” of one wife. How can a woman meet that qualification? There is nothing difficult about understanding the words of Paul in 1 Timothy 2. There is no secret interpretation or deeper meaning of the passage. It says what it says and the Episcopalian Church chooses to ignore it, all while claiming to follow the teachings of Christ.
To reject the teachings of Christ is to reject His authority and headship. It is not enough just to say that Jesus is the head of the church. We must demonstrate we believe it by our adherence to His word and by following all His commands. If we fail to do that, our claim to believe in His headship is just lip service.
Luke 6:46 (ESV)
46“ Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what I tell you?
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
