Tom Brady is widely known as the greatest quarterback in NFL history. He has won six Super Bowls, more than any other quarterback, and is the third highest-paid player professional football has ever had. In addition to his football salary, he earns about $8 million a year in endorsements. And, oh, by the way, most women do not think he is too hard to look at either. His wife sure is a lucky woman. Well, maybe, but in this case, she is just as accomplished in her field as Mr. Brady is in football. He is married to Gisele Bündchen, one of the most famous supermodels in the world. In 2016 she was the highest-paid model, earning $30.5 million. Even now, probably past her prime in the world of modeling, she is the 5th highest-paid model, a witness to how popular she was at the height of her career. Tom and Gisele are what the world calls a power couple.

A power couple is a married couple where both members are famous or accomplished in their own right. There are many of them in the world. Most of them are athletes or entertainers, but some are political couples, entrepreneurs, etc. They are very influential in the world and, together, yield a lot of power.

There is another kind of power couple, but most would never view them as such. The truth is, they do not even view themselves as such; still, they are very influential. They may not have any clout in the world, but in Christ their influence is widespread. Who are these power couples? They are husbands and wives who are faithful to God in all things.

These godly couples in Christ have the power to influence their children and grandchildren for good, often leading them to Christ and helping them grow. They have a great impact on the local church. After all, a church is only as strong as the families that constitute it. I am not downplaying the importance of those in the church who are single. Everybody in Christ’s body is somebody, and we can all help the church reach its full potential. Still, strong local churches have strong families led by husbands and wives that serve God well.

Christians married to Christians should be aware of the great good they can do for the cause of Christ. If that is you, do what you can to be one part of a power couple—a couple that all the young people in the church can look to as an example; a couple who can teach other younger couples who are newly married what it means to be good husbands and wives, even if it is only by your example. You have the power to do much good together, but only if you both are putting God first in your lives. There are some couples where the husband is on fire, but the wife shows little interest. There are many couples in which the wife is one of the most faithful members of the church, but the husband is sporadic in faithfulness, which means he is not faithful at all. Then, there are the power couples where both husband and wife are committed to the Lord.

Are you a part of a power couple in Christ? I thank God for the faithful husbands and wives that were members of the church when Janice and I first got married…men and women who we could look to and say, I hope we can be like them—faithful to God together.

If you are a power couple in Christ, you may not be making millions of dollars because of your craft, but Peter said that you have something better. Peter said that you are “heirs together of the grace of life” (1 Peter 3:7).
