The book of Philippians is one of Paul’s prison epistles, written while he was held as a prisoner for Christ in Rome. Paul had a positive mentality while he was imprisoned, believing that he would be released and able to be with his brethren once again. He expressed this confidence to the saints at Philippi (Philippi 1:22-27). Regardless of what his fate would ultimately be, Paul was adamant that the brethren at Philippi live a life that was pleasing to God.
Philippians 1:27 (ESV)
27 Only let your manner of life be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side for the faith of the gospel,
This was a sentiment that Paul often expressed to those to whom he wrote because he knew how important it is to live right while we are in this world.
Ephesians 4:1 (ESV)
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
He encouraged the brethren at Colossae “to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord” (Colossians 1:10), and the saints at Thessalonica to “to walk in a manner worthy of God” (1 Thessalonians 2:12).
How do we live a worthy life as Christian? It involves standing firm in the faith. The faith is the gospel of Christ, telling us that the gospel includes more than just the story of the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross. It contains instructions we must follow and commandments we must keep. Obedience to God is the only way that we can live a worthy life before Him. Yes, faith is extremely important when it comes to the salvation of our souls, but remember, the only saving faith is obedient faith (James 2:14-26).
Walking worthy also involves walking in harmony with other Christians. Paul said we must not only stand firm, but do so “in one spirit, with one mind striving side by side.” Those who think they can live faithfully before God while being at odds with brethren are greatly deceiving themselves. Unity among believers is a constant theme in the inspired writings of the New Testament.
John 17:21-22 (ESV)
21 That they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one,
1 Corinthians 1:10 (ESV)
10 I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.
Finally, this worthy walk involves bearing good fruit (Colossians 1:10). We must walk after the Spirit. When we do this, we will bear the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-23). Read of this fruit often. Memorize them and make sure they are a part of your walk with God. It is the only way you can live a worthy life.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
