What seems to be a fundamental fact to those of us who are Christians is a great mystery to many in this world of skepticism. We should know that not every skeptic is hostile to the concept of God. Many are just agnostic. Nevertheless, the question of God’s existence is a good one that needs answering.
Yes, there is a God. He is eternal and all-powerful. How can we be sure? Paul helps us answer that question.
Romans 1:20 (ESV)
20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.
We can be sure that there is a God Who is supreme in power because of the things that He has made. In this passage, Paul is referring to the creation of the universe and all it contains. David said that “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1).
How does the existence of the universe prove that there is an all-powerful God? First, one must realize that something cannot come from nothing. This is a fact that both evolutionists and creationists agree upon, at least primarily. There are a few radical thinkers who might deny this, but you can find a nut in any crowd. Since something cannot come from nothing, something has always existed. Something, or someone, is eternal. The universe was produced by whatever it is that is eternal.
There are only two choices here—intelligent mind (God) or matter. Evolutionists say that it is matter that has always existed, and the universe, as well as everything in it, including us, ultimately came from it. As popular as this opinion is, it does not make much sense. Is it really plausible to think that dead matter created life? This position is weakened further when it is realized that the only way that it could have happened was by accident. After all, something dead cannot purposely do anything. So, the conclusion among evolutionists is that billions of years ago, there was an unexplained explosion of dead matter, and from it came the universe and all life within it. No wonder David said, “The fool says in his heart, ‘There is no God” (Psalm 14:1).
The alternative position to the “eternal matter” theory is that an intelligent being (mind) is what is eternal, and this Being (God) created the universe. This makes the universe something that was planned rather than an accident. It accounts for the fact there is obvious order to the universe, something that could not be if everything just happened by accident. The truth is both the existence and order of the universe prove that there is a Creator behind it, and that Creator is God. David was right, the heavens declare the glory of God.
God is from everlasting to everlasting (Psalm 90:2). By His Word, the heavens were made (Psalm 33:6). This is not only the Bible position, but also the only position that makes any sense at all. Man may have his own opinions, theories, and hypotheses, but the Bible is right, and the evidence is clear—there is a God. He is our Maker, and to Him we will all someday give an account for the lives we live (2 Corinthians 5:10).
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
