Time is precious to us. While with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day (2 Peter 3:8), such is not the case with us. We are finite beings with a beginning and an end, so far as our physical lives are concerned. So then, what we do with the limited time that we have is important. This week we have been looking at the best way to use our time. Let us close the week by looking at spreading the gospel to the lost. Listen to Paul.
Colossians 4:3-5 (ESV)
3 At the same time, pray also for us, that God may open to us a door for the word, to declare the mystery of Christ, on account of which I am in prison— 4 that I may make it clear, which is how I ought to speak. 5 Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time.
There is a clear evangelistic leaning to these words. The best thing we could ever do for any non-Christian is to tell them the story about Jesus. The gospel is the power of God to salvation (Romans 1:16), and what is more important than the salvation of souls? Once people obeyed the gospel in the first century, it became their mission to tell others about Christ. That must be our mission as well.
Matthew 28:19 (ESV)
19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,
These are the marching orders for every child of God. While Jesus was addressing the apostles specifically in this verse, in the very next verse He tells them to teach those who obey the gospel to observe all that He had commanded them to do (ver. 20). This would include making disciples of all nations.
We must take the time to teach the gospel indiscriminately. While we must be wise in the spreading of the gospel, not giving dogs that which is holy or casting pearls before pigs (Matthew 7:6), we should do our part to assure that everyone hears the gospel at least once.
Mark 16:15 (KJV)
15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.
To do our best in reaching as many souls as we can, we must exercise good time management. These days we might have to get creative. I knew a man, who recently passed away, who spent his time making phone calls to set up Bible studies, organized mailings to the community, and sent out correspondence courses to the lost. That is redeeming the time.
Wasting time is easy. We all do it. Let us do our best to limit the time that we waste, using it, instead, in ways that will glorify our heavenly Father, help save souls, edify saints, and help ourselves grow in the faith. As you wind down tonight, remember these useful words of Paul:
Romans 13:11 (ESV)
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
In other words, every tick of the clock matters.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
