There is no greater way to secure the mind than with the Word of God.  Every child of God should read the Bible every day.  God’s Word, called “the sword of the Spirit” by Paul (Ephesians 6:17), is our best defense against the devil.  Sin is Satan’s tool, but there is no sin that the Word of God cannot squash.  The Psalmist showed that he realized this when he wrote, “Thy Word have I hid in my heart, that I might not sin against thee” (Psalm 119:11).

There are two things we should do with God’s Word when it comes to filling our minds with it.  First, as I suggested above, we should read it regularly.  If we read the Bible consistently, its words will stay in our minds.  It is a great practice to try to memorize certain passages and verses in the Bible, but the same thing can be accomplished by reading it regularly.  We will find ourselves memorizing the Bible due to repetition.  Reading the Bible every day is a great way to fill your mind with God’s Word.

To consistently do this, you must love God’s Word.  Without the proper love for God and His teachings, your attempt to read the Bible daily will only be fleeting.  That we can develop a desire for God’s Word is clear from the fact that Peter instructs us to do so.

1 Peter 2:2 (KJV)
2  As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby:

One thing that can help us with this, outside of pure love for God Himself, is realizing what the Word can do for us.  Peter tells us that it can help us grow.  Paul affirmed this when he wrote, “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the Word of Christ” (Romans 10:17).

God’s Word not only helps us to grow but also teaches us how to live in a way that is pleasing to God.

Titus 2:11-12 (ESV)
11  For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12  training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the present age,

How does God’s grace train us?  It does so by the Word of God (Hebrews 5:12-14).

The second thing we should do with the Word of God is study it.  While studying the Word obviously involves reading it, it involves a deeper dive into it.  Understanding God’s Word to the fullest demands research and investigation.  It involves knowing what certain words mean in their contexts.  It requires knowing why the different books of the Bible were written, to whom they were written, and when they were written.  This is all a part of rightly handling the Word of truth (2 Timothy 2:15), and it involves knowledge you do not get by a casual reading of it.

Fortunately, most local churches have arranged for their members to attend at least a couple of Bible studies during the week where they can become grounded and rooted in the Word of God.  It is up to each individual to attend those studies.

The Word of God can secure your mind and help keep you safe from the devil, but it does not happen automatically.  You must read and study it regularly.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
