Most people do not realize the importance of our bodies in the eyes of God. In several places, Paul emphasizes the significance of our bodies.
God sees our bodies as instruments to be used for righteousness. Paul wrote of this in Romans six.
Romans 6:12-14 (ESV)
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness. 14 For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.
We choose how we are going to use our bodies, whether it be for good or evil. While we all sin from time to time, we must determine not to make a habit of it. When we continue sinning, we are using our bodies in a way that pleases the devil and renders the grace of God useless in our lives. In such a case, sin has dominion over us. If, on the other hand, we use our bodies as instruments of righteousness, by abstaining from sin, sin has no power over us because we are under grace. How will you choose to use your body? Something that will help us with this is remembering that our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit that belong to God (1 Corinthians 6:19-20). Such being the case, let us give our bodies over to God for His use and glorification.
Romans 12:1 (ASV)
1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service.
How can we present our bodies to God as living sacrifices? We can give our eyes to God by not looking upon things that are sinful and unholy (1 John 2:16; 2 Peter 2:13, 14; Matthew 5:28, 29).
We can give our ears to God by continuing to listen to the instructions of God through the written word, i.e., engaging in regular Bible study (2 Timothy 2:15; James 1:21-25).
We can give our mouths to God by using our tongues for God’s glorification and the edifying of others (Ephesians 4:29; James 3:1-12), avoiding things such as gossip, backbiting, etc.
We can give our hands to God by being willing to engage in the good works that God has given us to do (Galatians 6:9, 10; Ephesians 2:10).
We can give our hearts to God by seeking Him with them wholly (Psalms 119:2; 14:2; Colossians 3:1-3, 22, 23; Matthew 6:19-24).
I think you get the point. Let’s determine to use our bodies as the instruments for righteousness that God sees them as being.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
