The Hebrew writer tells us that it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). This means that we can completely trust God’s word. Whatever His word says is truth (John 17:17). When God says something is going to happen, rest assured, it will happen. When God makes a promise, that promise is certain to be fulfilled, for “all the promises of God in him are yea” (2 Corinthians 1:19). Therefore, we can stand confidently on the promises of God. Let’s look at a few promises upon which we can rely.
God’s Providential Care
Jesus said, “But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and His righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Matthew 6:33). The “things” in this context refer to the necessities of life. We do not have to worry about what we are going to eat and drink and with what we shall be clothed, for God will take care of us (Matthew 6:25-32). This is a promise on which we can stand. God’s track record alone proves that He will never break this promise. He has always provided for His people, and He will continue to do so. Even in the garden of Eden, after Adam and Eve sinned against Him, God provided proper clothing for them (Genesis 3:21). God, who provides for the fowls of the air and the lilies of the field, will surely provide for His children (Matthew 7:11). There is, however, a condition. We must seek God first in our lives. If we turn away from God, we cannot expect God to watch over us and take care of our needs. However, if we obey God by following His word, His providential care will be a reality, just as He promised
The Security of God’s Presence
God has promised not to leave us alone. “Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee” (Hebrews 13:5). God is always near. Therefore, we can have boldness amidst our enemies. We do not have to fear man no matter how ungodly he might become. We do not have to be afraid of preaching the gospel or living the kind of morally upright life that God demands. Oh yes, man may mock us and even get upset by what we say and how we live; but, we are never alone. God is always there. It’s a promise and God cannot lie. So, let us be about our Father’s business. Let us do all that we can to win souls to Christ and to have a positive influence on the community around us. People might try to stop us by one form of persecution or another, but we have the security of God’s presence on our side. So be courageous!
God’s Forgiveness When We Sin
We all make mistakes, even against God. Sin is something with which we are all familiar. Not only because it is so prevalent in our society, but because of personal experience. We have all sinned (Romans 3:9. 23), and sin is not something to take lightly. God hates sin! Sin separates man from God (Isaiah 59:1, 2). But, because of Christ’s death for our transgressions, we can obtain forgiveness when we come short of God’s glory. John said concerning God, “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9). We do not have to be perfect to go to heaven. Moral purity and perfection should be our aim, but when we do sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous (1 John 2:1). And we have the assurance of God’s promise to forgive us. One of the greatest things we have going for us is the fact that we serve a forgiving God. Remember that! Don’t let sin get you down. When you sin, you should be disappointed in yourself and filled with godly sorrow. But don’t let the Devil fool you into thinking it’s too late to go to heaven. The blood of Christ can wipe your slate clean. Repent of your sin, whatever it may be, and God will remember it no more (Hebrews 8:12). Have trust in this promise.
Promises cannot always be relied on. Some people make promises very easily and then break them just as easily. Even the sincerest promises are sometimes broken by man. But God’s promises are sure. He never has broken a promise. And as far as His conditional promises are concerned, if man does his part, God will surely do His part as well. So, let us stand on the promises of God!
