The Godhead is composed of three persons—the Father, His Son, and the Holy Spirit. We are blessed to have a relationship with all three of them. They are all divine, eternal, and supreme in all ways. While they are three separate and distinct beings, they are one and work together for our benefit. Paul gives us an example of this.
Ephesians 2:18 (NKJV)
18 For through Him we both have access by one Spirit to the Father.
We have access to the Father through the avenue of prayer. What a blessing it is to have ongoing access to our heavenly Father. We should never take for granted the power that we have in being able to approach the throne of God whenever we want to do so. The Bible teaches us that not only do we have access to God, but we can have it with confidence.
Hebrews 10:19-22 (ESV)
19 Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the new and living way that he opened for us through the curtain, that is, through his flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith…
The “holy places” the Hebrews writer refers to here is heaven, of which the Most Holy Place in the temple was a type. We have access to it because Jesus shed His blood on the Cross, opening for us this new and living way, and now serves as our Mediator to help us when we pray.
1 Timothy 2:5 (ESV)
5 For there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,
When we pray, we do so through our Savior (Colossians 3:17) and in His name (Ephesians 5:20), giving us the boldness we need to enter the throne room of God.
The work of the Holy Spirit makes access to God possible as well. Paul said that this access comes by one Spirit. It is by the Spirit that we are sanctified (1 Peter 1:2), putting us in a position to have a relationship with the Father. The Spirit does this through the Word of God that He has revealed to us. When we obey that Word, we are born into the family of God (John 3:3-5), and become His children (John 1:12; 2 Corinthians 6:18).
It is nice to see one verse showing each member of the Godhead working together for our good. We can have confidence, not only in prayer, but regarding our overall spiritual well-being, knowing that the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit are all working together to help us overcome the devil and any obstacles he might throw at us.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
