Are you living a life of holiness? If you are, it is proven by the fruit that you bear. We are not holy just because we think we are, or because others think we are. We are holy because of the manner of life that we live.
To be holy means to live a life of moral purity, sanctified, or set apart, from the sins of the world. It means to be blameless, not from the standpoint of being sinless, but being obedient to the gospel of Christ, not allowing sin to reign over us. Read the exhortation of Paul concerning this.
Romans 6:12-13 (ESV)
12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions. 13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.
Most people in this world are servants of sin. That does not mean that they are all terrible people; in fact, many of them are wonderful, loving, and caring individuals, but they are still under the dominion of the devil. In order to be holy, one must be sanctified by the Spirit by obeying the gospel of Christ (Romans 1:16; 1 Peter 1:2). Holiness, from this standpoint, is passive, that is, it is something that is done to us. Once we are made holy by God, it is our responsibility to bring forth the fruit of holiness.
2 Corinthians 6:17-18-7:1 (ESV)
17 Therefore go out from their midst, and be separate from them, says the Lord, and touch no unclean thing; then I will welcome you, 18 and I will be a father to you, and you shall be sons and daughters to me, says the Lord Almighty. 1 Since we have these promises, beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit, bringing holiness to completion in the fear of God.”
You should see the connection between Romans 6:12-13 and this passage in 2 Corinthians. We stop sin from reigning in our mortal bodies by cleansing ourselves from every defilement of body and spirit. In this way, we are living holy lives, refraining from the popular avenues of immorality in our world today. This kind of living will separate us from the majority, characterizing us as Christians. It is our responsibility before God to make sure we are keeping ourselves unspotted from the world (James 1:27). Paul exhorts us to do so. Consider the words of these passages carefully.
Ephesians 4:1 (ESV)
1 I therefore, a prisoner for the Lord, urge you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called,
Hebrews 12:14 (ESV)
14 Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
1 Peter 1:14-16 (ESV)
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
As you wind down for the night, think about these things
