Obedience is another common characteristic of all Christians.  Anyone who is striving to follow in the steps of Jesus will always desire to please God (John 8:29).  True Christians have the same attitude depicted by the Psalmist in Psalm 119.

Psalm 119:19-20 (ESV)
19  I am a sojourner on the earth; hide not your commandments from me! 20  My soul is consumed with longing for your rules at all times.

Christians do not obey God grudgingly, they do it joyfully because they know what a blessing it is to serve God, and that His commandments are not a burden.

1 John 5:3 (ESV)
3  For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.

It is revealing that the Bible teaches us that knowing God and loving God result in the same thing.

1 John 2:3 (ESV)
3  And by this we know that we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.

John 14:15 (ESV)
15  “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.

All Christians know God.  It is impossible to be a Christian without doing so.  But anyone who knows God will love Him, and those who love Him obey Him; thus, all Christians are obedient.  There is just no such thing as a disobedient Christian.  Understand that when I speak of obedience here, I am referring to one’s manner of life.  I am not suggesting that Christians never sin (which are isolated acts of disobedience), but Christians do not practice sinning.  Listen to John’s discourse on this.

1 John 3:6-10 (ESV)
6  No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him. 7  Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8  Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9  No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him, and he cannot keep on sinning because he has been born of God. 10  By this it is evident who are the children of God, and who are the children of the devil: whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God…

Practicing righteousness, abiding in Him, and keeping His commandments are all different ways of referring to the same thing—obedience.  This characterizes the Christian.  He is not obedient once in a while, but rather he walks in obedience every day.  Like the Psalmist, Christians long for the rules of God “at all times.”

As you wind down for the night, think about these things
