One of the great blessings of life is having access to the Word of God. Think about it. When a person speaks, he is revealing his mind to those who hear him. We can learn a lot about a per-son just by listening to his words. Whether one is happy, sad, glad, or mad, can sometimes be ascertained by what he says. That God has so extensively revealed His mind to humanity by communicating with us through His Word, is a great benefit. We know things about God that we could never know were it not for His willingness to speak to us. This week, let us consider the value of the Word of God.

The first thing I want us to think about is the enlightening power of the Word of God. The Bible gives us information that cannot be found anywhere else, at least not from the standpoint of origi-nal information. For instance, it teaches us how man came into existence. I know that there are many theories floating around, but only the Bible tells us the truth. Man says that we evolved from monkeys, but, thankfully, we know better. We know that we were created by God, and, further-more, we were created in His image (Genesis 1:26-27). It is sad that man has such a degrading view of himself. Fortunately, because of the enlightening power of God’s Word, we know that we were wonderfully made. Listen to David:

Psalm 139:14 (ESV)
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

More importantly, we know where we are going. Those who discount the Bible yearn to know what comes after death, if anything at all. Bible believers, however, know because the Word of God enlightens us. We know that we do not cease to exist when we die, but rather, one of these days, every grave will be opened, and those in them will be raised, some to life, and some to judgment (John 5:28-29). And, because of the teachings of God’s Word, we even know in which category we will be found. Those who obey the gospel and live faithfully to God unto death, will be raised to life (Romans 1:16; Revelation 2:10), and those who never obey the gospel will expe-rience eternal damnation (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9).

We should be glad that the Bible teaches us precisely how to live our lives so that we experience the resurrection of life. David said, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105). We know how to worship God in a such a way that is pleasing to Him (John 4:24). We know how to accomplish His will, which is critical since only those who do the will of God will go to heaven (Matthew 7:21). It would be terrible to know that we must do God’s will to be saved, but then not have any idea what that will is? Fortunately, we do not have to worry about that because we have the Word of God to enlighten us.

Titus 2:11-12 (ESV)
11 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation for all people, 12 training us to renounce ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright, and godly lives in the pre-sent age,

How does the grace of God train us to live properly so that we can be saved and go to heaven? It does so by the enlightening power of God’s Word. Be thankful!

As you wind down for the night, think on these things.
