Our articles this week have been dedicated to giving the Holy Spirit the respect and reverence He deserves. Too many of us forget to give Him praise for all that He has done for us, and for who and what He is, that is, a divine person. Without the Holy Spirit, we would have no hope of heav-en.
Last night we considered the part the Holy Spirit plays in our salvation and sanctification, empha-sizing that He accomplishes those works by the Word of God. Tonight, I want to emphasize that the Holy Spirit not only works through the Word of God, He is the Revealer of God’s Word as well. Having the Word of God is a wonderful blessing. When Paul taught the Jews that salvation is at-tained the same way by both Jews and Gentiles, he anticipated that they would ask what ad-vantage there was for them being the people of God for so many years. Here is how Paul would answer that question if they asked:
Romans 3:2 (ESV)
2 Much in every way. To begin with, the Jews were entrusted with the oracles of God.
Having God’s Word gave the Jews an advantage in the previous dispensation, and it gives us an advantage today. Where would we be without the Word of God? We would be without spiritual guidance. We would not know how to worship God, work for God, or serve Him in any meaningful capacity. Without revelation, we would be spiritually blind. Thank God for the Holy Spirit who has revealed God’s Word to us. The Bible is the product of the Spirit.
1 Corinthians 2:9-10 (ESV)
9 But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.
Paul was writing about the gospel, and the salvation that it brings, in the context of 1 Corinthians 2. God’s plan of salvation was a mystery until it was revealed to the apostles and prophets of the New Testament by the Holy Spirit.
Ephesians 3:4-5 (ESV)
4 When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ, 5 which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations as it has now been revealed to his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.
Now we can accomplish God’s will because we know what it is (Ephesians 5:17). We can now work and worship God, and we can know that we are doing what is pleasing to Him. Now we can work out our own salvation with fear and trembling (Phil. 2:12).
There is certainly a lot to be thankful for when it comes to the Holy Spirit, but His work in revealing to us the Word of God is close to the top. We can now clearly see the path that leads to heaven. All we have to do is walk after the Spirit by following what He reveals to us, and He will lead us home.
As you wind down for the night, think on these things.
