John 10:7-9 (ESV)
7  So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. 8  All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. 9  I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture.

To fully understand the words of Jesus here, at least some understanding of the sheepfold of Jesus’ day needs to be attained.  A.W. Pink, in his commentary on the gospel of John, helps us with this.

“Here the setting is the open country into which the shepherd led the sheep for grazing, and where, in the summer months, shepherd and sheep might spend the night.  Overnight the sheep were placed in roughly constructed round stone-walled enclosures. The top of the dry-stone wall was covered with thorns to keep out wild animals. Inside the enclosure, the sheep were safe so long as the entrance was secured by the shepherd. He slept across the entrance as there was no door and no doorkeeper” (Pink, A.W., Exposition of the Gospel of John – Volume 2).

Many important points can be made regarding Jesus being the Door of the sheep, but here are two.

  • Jesus is the Door that leads to safety and salvation.

As Christians, we are the sheep of Christ, the Good Sheperd (John 10:11).  We are surrounded by wolves that want to devour us, but by entering the Door into the enclosure of Christ, we have refuge from the outside predators.  These predators are false teachers, counterfeit churches, false brethren, and worldly influencers who all put our souls in jeopardy.  If we enter the door and abide in Christ, by living by the gospel of our Lord, the wolves cannot harm us.  Our good Sheperd will protect us.  In Christ, we find safety and secure for our salvation.

Romans 8:1 (ESV)
1  There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

  • Jesus is the only door.

There are many false places of refuge today.  Denominational churches that offer safety cannot deliver on their promise because Jesus is not the Door that leads inside of them.  You might find fun and frolic in those churches.  You might find a lot of social events to get involved in that include all kinds of entertainment and recreation.  You will, no doubt, find some good people who believe they are in the right place, but what you will not find is salvation.  That can only be gained by entering the right Door.

World religions, such as Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, etc., have doors that were built by man, that is, one enters them according to their man-made instructions; thus, they too might have something to offer, just not the most important thing—freedom from sin and protection from the devil and his allies.  Only in Christ can one attain those things, and only by following His instructions can one enter.  Jesus said, “He that believes and is baptized shall be saved” (Mark 16:16).  Baptism is a burial into Christ (Romans 6:3-4), done in His name (Acts 2:38). This is the only way to enter a place of spiritual safety and salvation.  It is the only door.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
