After Jesus ascended back to the Father, two angels appeared with a very specific message.

Acts 1:9–11 (ESV)
⁹ And when he had said these things, as they were looking on, he was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight. ¹⁰ And while they were gazing into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white robes, ¹¹ and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into heaven? This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

One of these days, at a time that only the Father knows (Matthew 24:36), Jesus is going to return.  A lot of people will not like it when He comes back and the devil is on the top of that list, but no one can stop it from happening.  The day has already been appointed by God.  I know this because of what the bible says about the day of judgment which, of course, follows the second coming of Christ.

Acts 17:30–31 (ESV)
³⁰ The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent, ³¹ because he has fixed a day on which he will judge the world in righteousness by a man whom he has appointed; and of this he has given assurance to all by raising him from the dead.”

If the judgment day has been fixed, so has the day of our Lord’s return.  It is a certainty promised by Jesus Himself.

John 14:2–3 (ESV)
² In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? ³ And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also.

What is going to happen when Jesus comes back?  Again, Jesus Himself tells us.

John 5:28–29 (ESV)
²⁸ Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice ²⁹ and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.

When will all these graves be opened?  At the second coming of our Lord.  Paul spoke of this when he was allowed to defend himself before Felix, the Roman governor, against the false accusations of the Jews.

Acts 24:14–15 (ESV)
¹⁴ But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, I worship the God of our fathers, believing everything laid down by the Law and written in the Prophets, ¹⁵ having a hope in God, which these men themselves accept, that there will be a resurrection of both the just and the unjust.

The second coming of Christ, the resurrection of the dead, and the day of judgment that will follow are all a part of what scholars refer to as eschatology, the doctrine of final things.  There are religious groups that make these events far more complicated than the bible does, adding things to the period such as the rapture, the tribulation, and the battle of Armageddon.  The truth is that biblical eschatology is easy to understand when we just stick to the facts.  On the God-appointed day, Jesus will return (Hebrews 9:28), the dead will rise (John 5:29), and man will stand before the Son of God in judgment (2 Corinthians 5:10).

The only question to be answered is will you be ready for that day when Jesus returns?  If you have not accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior by obeying the gospel of Christ, you will be unprepared.  That day will catch you like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:1-2).  If you are a Christian, you will be ready then, and you should be anxiously waiting for Him now.

¹³ Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
