Every Christian knows how valuable the precious blood of Christ is. Jesus tasted death for everyone (Hebrews 2:9), and because of this everyone who accepts Him as their Savior is saved by His blood (Matthew 26:28). Thank God that Jesus was willing to be obedient to His Father, even to the point of death on the cross (Philippians 2:8).
While the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ is the heart of the gospel (1 Corinthians 15:3-4), making our salvation possible, His life is very valuable as well. That life is the light of man (John 1:5).
Jesus called Himself the light of the world on several occasions (John 8:12; 9:5). Light reveals and the life of Jesus has revealed precious things to us, beginning with the Father. Jesus is an exact replica of the Father. The Hebrews writer called Him “the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of His nature” (Hebrews 1:3). No wonder Jesus told Philip, “…Whoever has seen me has seen the Father (John 14:9).
We see in Jesus the characteristics of the Father; namely, love, compassion, forgiveness, and patience. Since Jesus is the exact imprint of the Father’s nature, we know that our Father has all of these characteristics as well. It is comforting to know that we serve such a wonderful and loving God.
The life of Jesus is also precious because it reveals to us what kind of people we should be. Remember, it is the fundamental aim of every Christian to be like Christ.
Philippians 2:5 (ESV)
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,
Peter exhorts us to follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:21). The characteristics we see in Jesus, the very ones that characterize the Father, are the characteristics that we should all strive to have. The life of Jesus is valuable to us because it reveals to us what we should be.
The life of Jesus is of great value to us because it assures us of our own salvation. Paul said that since we have been reconciled to God by the death of Jesus, we shall be saved by His life (Romans 5:10). Yes, the death of Jesus was essential for our salvation, but without His life, we would still be without hope.
Romans 5:10 (ESV)
10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Finally, the life of Jesus is valuable to us because of what He does for us now that he lives again.
Hebrews 7:25 (ESV)
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
In Jesus we have an advocate with the Father (1 John 2:1). It is because of the life of Jesus and what He is now doing for us, that we can be more than conquerors (Romans 8:34-37). We have so much to be thankful for when we think about the life of Jesus. Others may think that His life is insignificant; however, to those of us who believe, it is more valuable than anything else we have.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
