The greatest blessing of all, experienced by those of us in Christ, is an incorruptible inheritance.
Ephesians 1:11 (ESV)
11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will,
We are just pilgrims passing through this world. It is not our home, so why are we so obsessed with it? Let us remember that this world, and everything in it, is passing away (1 John 2:17). Guard against loving it too much. Afterall, we have something far better. We have the hope of eternal life in heaven. Peter described it like this:
1 Peter 1:3-4 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
Peter uses three terms to describe our inheritance. It is imperishable, i.e., it is not liable to corrup-tion or decay. It is undefiled, i.e., it is not susceptible to contamination. Finally, it is unfading, i.e., its beauty and splendor is perpetual. How different is our inheritance from that of an earthly one?
What can you inherit in this world that does not soon lose it attractiveness and appeal? In fact, what can you inherit in this world that does not, at some point, perish altogether? Can you think of anything? You inherit money, but, before you know it, it is being spent by someone else. You inherit a house and, before you know it, the roof is leaking, and the floors are squeaking. You in-herit your father’s business, but, before you know it, instead of you running the business, the business is running you, and your health begins to fail. This is the nature of earthly inheritances. They do not offer much hope.
Our hope, on the other hand, involves an inheritance that is endless, eternal, and everlasting. It is permanent, perpetual, and predetermined. Our hope is unchangeable, unmovable, and unaltera-ble, and Peter tells us that it will never fade away.
We are greatly comforted, not just by the durability of our inheritance, but the nature of it. It in-volves a place where all the sickness, sorrow, and sin of this world will be no more.
Revelation 21:4 (ESV)
4 He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourn-ing, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
That is our inheritance! What a place heaven will be. However, to be there later on, we must be in Christ here on earth. Thank God that those of us who are Christians are in Christ. If you hap-pen to be reading this blog, maybe for the first time, and you are not in Christ, I urge you to do some about that while you can. Obey the gospel. Be baptized for the forgiven of your sins, for that will put you in Christ (Galatians 3:27), where you too can enjoy the hope of an incorruptible inheritance.
As you wind down for the night, think on these things.
