In a constantly changing world, it is comforting to know that some things always remain the same. This is especially true when it comes to our relationship with God and the blessings that come from Him. This week I want to consider with you some things that will never change. Let’s think about these things with gratitude in our hearts and praise on our lips as they remind us of how wonderful our God is.
One thing that never changes is the faithfulness of God. The truth is nothing about God, concerning His character, ever changes.
Malachi 3:6 (ESV)
6 “For I the LORD do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
God is, along with all of His other wonderful attributes, a consistent God. This should be very comforting to all of us. When we get up each morning we do not have to worry about the God who will watch over us, for the same loving, merciful, and long-suffering God who was with us the previous day, will watch over us at night and meet us in the morning, for God does not change! The God we served yesterday is the same God we serve today, and He will be the same tomorrow because His divine counsel is unchangeable.
It is especially comforting to know that God’s faithfulness never changes. Two things tell us this. First, from our own experiences, we know that God has always been faithful and, since we know He never changes, there is no reason to conclude that He will ever stop being faithful. Second, we can rely on the faithfulness of God because His word tells us that He is faithful, and He never lies (Titus 1:2; Hebrews 6:18). This is why we do not have to continuously waver when it comes to our salvation. God has promised us eternal life.
1 John 2:25 (ESV)
25 And this is the promise that he made to us—eternal life.
Paul wrote of God’s faithfulness regarding our salvation in his epistle to the Corinthian church.
1 Corinthians 1:7–9 (ESV)
7 So that you are not lacking in any gift, as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 8 who will sustain you to the end, guiltless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
What a wonderful promise—God will sustain us to the end. This is not an affirmation of the Calvinistic doctrine of “once saved, always saved.” Paul is not teaching that one cannot fall from grace. The key to understanding Paul’s words here is knowing how it is that God sustains us. He does it through the many spiritual gifts that He gives to those who obey the gospel. We have the tools that it takes to never fall, given to us by the grace of God, including His word, prayer, God’s armor, the blood of Christ, and the advocacy of His Son when we sin. While we have to take hold of these blessings and use them, we know, based on the faithfulness of God, that they can and will sustain us.
How do we know that God will continue to hear our prayers? How do we know that the blood of Christ will continue to cleanse us from all unrighteousness when we repent and ask God for forgiveness? How do we know that God’s armor will continue to protect us from the wiles of the devil? We know these things because God has promised to sustain us and He is faithful.
Eternal life is ours and, while we can voluntarily give it up, no one, not even the devil can take it away from us (John 10:27-29). Indeed, God is faithful, and this is something that will never change.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
