We live in a world that is constantly changing. What is “in” today will be “out” tomorrow. What is presently viewed as right will soon be considered wrong. This is just the way the world is. Everything around us seems to be changing.
There is great comfort in things that never change. This week, let’s consider some things we know will never change. Things we can be sure will be the same tomorrow as they are today. The first one I want to discuss is the faithfulness of God.
The word faithful means to be trustworthy. It refers to those who we can rely on to keep their word and fulfill their promises. Man has a propensity to break promises. Paul once wrote, “…yea, let God be true, but every man a liar…” (Romans 3:4), and the Psalmist declared, “I said in my haste, All men are liars” (Psalms 116:11). This does not indicate that we all lie habitually, but it does show that man can lie and often does.
But God is not like man. We can stand on His promises. After all, He has never broken a promise. Lying is one of the things that God cannot do (Hebrew 6:18). While not being able to lie is a self-imposed limitation that God has placed on Himself because it is incompatible with His nature, it teaches us, nevertheless, that God’s word can be trusted explicitly. Paul simply wrote, “God is faithful” (1 Corinthians 1:9).
As our heavenly Father, God provides for us faithfully. We do not have to worry about the necessities of life because we know God will take care of us. Jesus makes this point clear in the Sermon on the Mount.
Matthew 6:30–33 (ESV)
30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
If we seek the kingdom of God first in our lives, we can be sure about the providential provisions of God. He has always provided for His people, and this will never change. He is faithful when it comes to watching over us. Paul told the brethren at Philippi, “And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19). We should all be comforted by the fact that God’s faithful provisions for us are something on which we can always count.
We can rely on anything that God has ever promised. We do not have to worry about heaven being our future home if we live faithfully until we die. When we pray, we do not have to wonder if God is listening to us. We do not have to doubt that God will always give us a way of escape when we are tempted by the devil. God has promised these things to us and He is faithful. He has always kept His word, and He always will. While everything around us changes, the faithfulness of God will always remain the same.
2 Corinthians 1:18–20 (NKJV)
18 But as God is faithful, our word to you was not Yes and No. 19 For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us—by me, Silvanus, and Timothy—was not Yes and No, but in Him was Yes. 20 For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
