In a world where things that we have been familiar with have drastically changed, some things are still the same. Our Lord is one of those things. What are some things about Jesus that will never change?
His character is one of those things. He has always been a loving, patient, kind, and merciful person and always will be. Our relationship with Him is enhanced when we remember that His love for us and His loving behavior toward us will never change.
Romans 8:35 (NKJV)
35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?
The implied answer to this question is nothing, including all the things Paul mentions in this text. Nothing will stop Jesus from loving us. We should take great comfort in this truth.
We should also take delight in the fact that the roles Jesus occupies in this dispensation will never change. Jesus is Lord and He always will be. Sometimes the word “Lord” is used as nothing more than a term of respect, but with Jesus, it means much more than that. The word “kyrios,” which is the Greek word for Lord, when attached to Christ refers to His total supremacy and denotes that He is supreme in authority. Knowing this, we must obey Him in all things. He is the one to whom we will give an account on the day of judgment (Acts 17:31).
Another role of His that will never change is His headship. He is the sole head of the church.
Ephesians 1:22 (ESV)
22 And he put all things under his feet and gave him as head over all things to the church,
Jesus is not the head over some things to the church but over all things. This means that nothing in the church can be done without His authority (Colossians 3:17). The work that the church does must be authorized by Christ. How we worship God must be authorized by Him as well. People seem to think they can change the work and worship of the church on a whim. Whenever they deem it necessary for the church to do things in a new and fresh way, they simply make a change.
Some brethren have taught for years that we must only give on the first day of the week like the New Testament church did (1 Corinthians 16:1-2), but now teach we can give any time by way of online contributions.
Churches have now changed the time they meet for worship from the first day of the week to Saturday simply because it is more convenient.
Both denominational churches and liberal-minded churches of Christ have added social functions for entertainment and recreation to the work of the church.
All these additions and changes are done without one word of authorization from Christ, revealing that many only pay lip service to believing that Jesus is the head over all things to the church, but their actions betray them.
Another role of Christ that we can rely on is His mediatorial role. As the Hebrews writer once said, Jesus always lives to make intercession for us (Hebrews 7:25). There is one mediator between God and man and that is Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). This is the unchangeable function of Jesus, and we should thank God for it. Whenever we sin, we can be forgiven if we repent and pray to God (Acts 8:22; 1 John 1:9). It is wonderful to know that when we go before the throne of God and beg forgiveness from Him, we do not go alone. Jesus is always with us, interceding on our behalf. We should be glad that this will never change.
