It is a joy to have people in our lives on whom we can rely. There are friends and family members who we trust because their character, and, consequently, their behavior, is consistent. We know what to expect from them and it is reassuring. No one in our lives fits that description more than Jesus. He is immutable.
Hebrews 13:8 (ESV)
8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
What is it about Jesus that we should appreciate and be thankful that He will never change? One thing that jumps out at us about the character of Christ is how willing He was to sacrifice for others. He truly put the welfare of others before Himself.
Philippians 2:5-7 (ESV)
5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.
Jesus emptied Himself to give us a chance at eternal life. In 2 Corinthians 8:9, Paul said that Jesus “became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich.” Indeed, He took on the form of a servant.
We are not surprised to read about Jesus being a servant because all He did when He was here on earth was serve others. That is what His life was about. From the moment He was born in the likeness of men, until He breathed His last breath on Calvary’s cross, He was serving mankind. Since Jesus is immutable, that is, He always remains the same, what do you think He is doing right now? I’ll give you the answer—He continues to serve us.
Hebrews 7:25 (ESV)
25 Consequently, he is able to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them.
What else do we know about Jesus? Obviously, there is more than we have space to discuss here, but something we should consider is His great outrage toward sin. When He was here on earth, He cleansed the temple of money-changers because He was filled with righteous indignation (John 2:13-17). In fact, He cleansed the temple twice (Matthew 12:12-13). Do you think sin has become less offensive to Jesus over the years? Of course not! He is the same yesterday, today, and forever.
Jesus is also a very forgiving person. This was never exemplified more than when He was on the cross and prayed for His persecutors, saying, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34). Aren’t you glad we serve such a forgiving Savior? He is never going to stop interceding for us. He is never going to stop loving us, even though we disappoint Him so often, because He is always willing to forgive, and He does not change.
These are a few of the things that we know about Jesus, and we know they will always be true because He is immutable. Now, as you wind down tonight, remember this—as Christians, we must follow the example of our Savior. We should be a people willing to sacrifice for others, ready to forgive, but always upset by sin. Let us do our best to follow in the steps of our Savior.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
