There are some things we wish we did not have to do. And indeed, there are some things that we are able to avoid doing when we do not want to do them. On the other hand, there are some things that are unavoidable. In this article, let us look at some things that we cannot escape, no matter how much we wish we could.
1. Personal accountability before God.
Paul said, “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12). This is an inescapable reality for each one of us. God places a certain amount of responsibility on every individual. The responsibilities God gives each individual relates to the talent level that God gave them (Luke 12:48). However, there is one thing with which we are all blessed, and that is a mind with which to think and reason. So then, one responsibility that every person who has reached the age of accountability, has is to obey God, something that begins with the mind. Will every person obey the gospel of Christ? Of course not, but that does not remove the responsibility to do so. In order to be saved, a person much believe, repent, confess and be baptized. No one can do these things for someone else because we all have the ability to do them for ourselves. Someone might say, “No one can force me to obey the gospel, so I can escape doing this.” Yes, that is true. We can escape the doing of our responsibilities, but what we cannot escape are the consequences of our decision. We cannot escape accountability. God will not force anyone to obey Him, but He will punish those who choose not to obey (2 Thessalonians 1:8,9). It should be noted that after one obeys the gospel, faithfulness unto death is required by God (Revelations 2:10). Anything God commands, we must do. Only then will our souls be safe from the wrath of God.
2. The all-seeing eye of God.
The Hebrew writer declared, “Neither is there any creature that is not manifest in his sight: but all things are naked and opened unto the eyes of him with whom we have to do” (Hebrews 4:13). This is one reason we better take our responsibilities seriously. We cannot fool God. Paul once put it like this: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap” (Galatians 6:7). Why is it that God cannot be mocked? It is because He is able to discern between the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). He knows what we are doing at all times, and He knows why we it. He is, in other words, aware of our motives, as well as our actions. Serving that kind of God should instill fear into our hearts. We should diligently do God’s will, knowing that if we do not, He will be aware of it. Remember the words of David: “O Lord, thou hast searched me, and known me. thou knowest my down-sitting and mine uprising, thou understandest my thought afar off” (Psalms 139:1,2). Nothing we do passes by God .
3. The day of judgment.
We should keep in mind the words found in Hebrews 9:27. “And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.” Death is not the end of things as some suppose. It is a comforting doctrine to some to conclude that when we die, we just cease to exist. Unfortunately for those who conclude such, that is a false doctrine. When we die, we go to await judgment. Let us never forget that on that great day, we shall be judged according to our works (Revelations 20:12). The judgment will be fair and just. Paul calls it righteous judgment (Romans 2:5). It will be righteous because God will render to every man according to his deeds (Romans 2:6). You will not be judged by the works of someone else. You will be judged only according to what you have done. It will be a righteous judgment because the standard by which you will be judged is flawless. That standard will be the words of Christ (John 12:48). One day both you and I will appear before the judgment seat of Christ. It will be a great day, terrifying for some, and wonderful for others, depending on how you live your life now.
Yes, some things are inescapable. You cannot run fast enough to get away from them. You can hide from them. You can ignore them, but they will not go away. The best thing to do is realize that they are inescapable and do what is right in the eyes of God.
