What should we do for Jesus? That is the question that we are considering this week as we wind down each night. Jesus gave His all for us. Notice how Paul described His giving.
2 Corinthians 8:9 (ESV)
9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you by his poverty might become rich.
While we can never pay Jesus back for all that He did for us, we should spend our lives trying to do so. What can we do for Jesus? In our last blog, I wrote about striving to represent Him by liv-ing our lives in such a way that others see Him living in us. Tonight, I want you to consider the importance of defending Jesus.
We live in a world that is hostile toward Christ. This is not a new development. The world has always rejected Him. The cause of this rejection is a lack of knowledge (John 1:10). The devil has blinded the eyes of unbelievers to keep them from seeing the light (2 Corinthians 4:4). In many cases, this lack of knowledge turns into downright hatred for Christ and His disciples (John 15:18).
We owe it to Christ to defend Him against the many attacks of the world. The character of Christ is constantly coming under attack, and once again, it is nothing new.
Matthew 11:19 (ESV)
19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look at him! A glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners…”
Today, Jesus is called everything from an impostor to a male-chauvinist. Since Jesus is no longer here to defend Himself, we need to do it. We need to prove from the scriptures that Jesus is exactly who He said He was, that is, the Son of God. We can point people to the many prophecies that Jesus fulfilled or to the miracles that He performed when He was here on earth. John said that he recorded those miracles so that people would believe that Jesus is the Christ (John 20:30-31). Will people turn to Him in masses and stop attaching His character? No, but that should not stop us from doing our part by defending Him whenever we can.
We also need to defend His doctrine. The doctrine of Christ is the totality of New Testament teaching, and most people do not like it. They do not like the moral teachings of the doctrine of Christ, but we must be willing to defend it. Some might call us narrow-minded, while others will think that we are ignorant for believing such an outdated and antiquated book; still, defending the teachings of Christ is the least we can do for Him. Are you willing to stand up for Jesus and de-fend Him and His teaching against the hostile attacks of the world? If you need a little motivation, just think about what Jesus endured for all of us
Hebrews 12:2-3 (ESV)
2 Looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured from sinners such hostility against himself, so that you may not grow weary or fainthearted.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
