In Genesis 3, we read of the fall of Adam and Eve. God told them not to eat the fruit of the tree that was in the midst of the garden of Eden (ver. 3), but the devil came along in the form of a serpent and tempted them (vers. 1-5). Eve succumbed to his temptation first by eating the forbidden fruit, but shortly after, Adam followed her bad example and ate of it as well (ver. 6). Knowing that they had sinned, when they heard God approaching, they hid among the trees of the Garden (ver. 8). That is when we read of God asking Adam and Eve, “where are you?” (ver. 9). He did not ask the question to get information. There is no place where men can hide from the all-seeing eyes of God (Hebrews 4:13). He asked the question just to get a response from them.
This is still a good question for you to consider tonight. Where are you? I am not asking about your physical location, but rather, I am asking where you are spiritually. Are you in the place you need to be in order to be saved and maintain a relationship with God? There is only one place to be if you want to go to heaven—in Christ.
Ephesians 1:3 (ESV)
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Does this sound like the place you want to be—the place where every spiritual blessing is located? The truth is, it is not only the place you should want to be, it is the place you need to be if you want the joy of spiritual blessings. The greatest blessing of all is the salvation of the soul, which is only located in Christ (2 Timothy 2:10).
To be saved is to be in a state where you have, by the grace of God, escaped condemnation. Paul said, “There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8:1). The word condemnation refers to a damnable sentence. In Christ, you do not have to worry about condemnation. Where are you? If you are not in Christ you will receive a verdict you do not like on the day of judgment, but in Christ eternal glory will be yours in the end.
If you are not in Christ, but you would like to be, all you have do is obey the Word of God and you will be delivered from the power of darkness and translated into the kingdom of God’s dear Son (Colossians 1:13). To be in the kingdom is to be in Christ, but, again, how do you get there? You know you have to obey the gospel, but how do you do that? Fortunately, we have clear instructions from the Holy Spirit.
Acts 2:37-38 (KJV)
37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
There should be no misunderstanding here. The people wanted to know what they had to do to be saved, and Peter told them to repent and be baptized. That is what you have to do if you want to be in Christ. Where are you locationally, not physically, but spiritually? Are you in Christ? I hope you can say yes. If you are, make sure that you remain faithful to the Lord for the rest of your life, and you will reap the spiritual benefits of being in Him.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
