We all have either one of two kinds of minds. We are either carnal-minded, minding the things of the flesh, or we are spiritual-minded, minding the things of God. Where are you spiritually? What kind of mindset do you have? Paul wrote of our mindset in Romans 8.
Romans 8:5 (ESV)
5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.
To mind the things of the flesh is to give our time and attention to the works of the flesh. It is to allow the desires of the flesh to lead us to sin. To mind the things of the Spirit is to be under the influence and direction of the Spirit. It is to give our attention to spiritual things. Now, notice what Paul writes next.
Romans 8:6 (ESV)
For to set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace.
The decision concerning what to set the mind on should not be too difficult. One leads to death and the other to life. We should all want to go where the Spirit leads us. The Spirit, through the avenue of God’s Word, leads us to a God-pleasing life now, and to eternal life with God in the end. To follow the flesh is unprofitable in every way, but especially because it leads to death, that is, separation from God now, and eternal damnation in eternity. Where are you spiritually? Let us all do our best to set our minds on the Spirit and to think heavenward.
Colossians 3:1-2 (ESV)
1 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
Paul is addressing those who have been buried in the waters of baptism with Christ (Colossians 2:12), and have been raised with Him to walk in the newness of life (Romans 6:4). Notice the contrast that sets forth the two courses from which we must choose. We can either set our minds on things above (being spiritual-minded) or on things on earth (resulting in being carnal-minded). As Christians, we should desire to seek the things where Christ is at the right hand of God.
Do you find yourselves more interested in the things of this world than you do the things of Christ? If so, you need to follow the admonition of Peter.
1 Peter 1:13 (NKJV)
13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ;
In biblical times, men wore long, flowing robes. When it was time to work they gathered their robes and girded them up with a belt so that they could move freely. To gird up the loins of our minds is to gather together our thoughts and focus them on spiritual things. Do not allow your thoughts to be loose and wandering while focusing on earthly things. Instead, fill your minds with God’s Word and think about spiritual things.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
