In Proverbs eleven, Solomon emphasizes the benefits of righteous living.
Proverbs 11:4 (ESV)
4 Riches do not profit in the day of wrath, but righteousness delivers from death.
The wisdom of God and the wisdom of this world are vastly different. The world believes that an accumulation of earthly riches and wealth is the path to success and happiness, while wisdom from above teaches the truth—riches cannot deliver us from wrath. What can deliver us is righteous living.
To live righteously is to live according to the Word of God. Such living will help us avoid much trouble in this life. No, we cannot escape the trials of life completely. Everyone experiences difficulties in this world because of the presence of Satan and sin. Paul said, “For we that are in this tabernacle do groan, being burdened…” (2 Corinthians 5:4). Job reminds us that, “Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble” (Job 14:1).
Because of the presence of sin and sinful people, life itself is problematic; however, many of the trials of life are self-induced. Sin can wreck the body. Paul was referring to this when he condemned the immoral living of the Gentiles in Romans one.
Romans 1:27 (KJV)
27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet.
While there are many physical ailments that we all are susceptible to, the righteous do not have to worry about the problems that come directly because of sin—sexually transmitted diseases, cirrhosis of the liver due to alcohol consumption, health problems caused by smoking (cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, etc.). Some of these problems may affect those who do not smoke, but smoking raises the odds of getting them exponentially.
Then, there are the problems of sin that are not health-related. Lives are ruined, homes are broken, and marriages are ended by things such as gambling, adultery, drunkenness, etc., all resulting in great heartache and trouble. A great deal of these things can be avoided by righteous living.
Proverbs 11:8 (ESV)
8 The righteous is delivered from trouble, and the wicked walks into it instead.
The most important benefit of living righteously is deliverance from the consequences of spiritual death, that being the wrath of God. The wrath that Solomon referred to in ver. 4 is probably a reference to wrath in general, but the wrath of God would be encompassed by his statement, and the wrath of God is the worse kind. Fortunately, the righteous are delivered from such wrath.
Romans 5:9 (ESV)
9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
This is, of course, contingent on our righteous living. If we so live, we will have life now and forevermore.
Proverbs 11:19 (ESV)
19 Whoever is steadfast in righteousness will live, but he who pursues evil will die.
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
