In whom, or in what, do you put your trust? People put their trust in many different things in life, but the greatest source of trust, by far, is the Lord. David probably said it best.
Psalm 20:7 (ESV)
7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.
David passed this trust on to his son, who, in turn, encourages all of us to trust as well.
Proverbs 3:5 (ESV)
5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.
In writing about trusting the Lord, Solomon emphasized two important things. First, we must trust God with all our hearts. Anything less than this is really not trust at all, but is, instead, to doubt, something that is not very profitable.
James 1:6-8 (ESV)
6 But let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea that is driven and tossed by the wind. 7 For that person must not suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; 8 he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
What will stop us from trusting in the Lord completely? It is the second important thing Solomon spoke of concerning trusting the Lord—trusting in ourselves more than God. He wrote of leaning on our own understanding. Nothing seems to get in the way of serving God more than “self.” To trust in the Lord with all our hearts, we must first crucify ourselves and live our lives by faith in the Son of God (Galatians 2:20).
If we trust in the Lord with all our hearts, we will trust Him every day, no matter what life throws our way.
Psalm 62:8 (ESV)
8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your heart before him; God is a refuge for us.
To trust in God at all times means that we will continue to have complete trust in Him during the difficult times of life just as we do in times of prosperity. Too many people only trust in the Lord when things are going their way. They abandon their trust early on when times of trouble come, not understanding that it is when things are difficult that we need God the most, and at which time we should pour out our hearts before Him.
There is no magic formula to trusting in the Lord. It is the fixed purpose of those who have proper faith. It is a pre-determination to trust God for the rest of our lives regardless of how our lives are going.
Isaiah 26:4 (ESV)
4 Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.
We can trust in the Lord every day. The question is, will we?
As you wind down for the night, think about these things.
